I was working as an overweight, 3rd shift security guard before I joined the military.
Yep – I work for the Coast Guard in a search and rescue unit now, but I wasn’t always doing this. Before becoming a personal trainer and helping people take back their lives, I was LETTING life pass me by. I had lost my athletic body from college, any motivation to excel, and I was just trying to do my job and get paid. In the end it was a blessing in disguise because I was forced to figure out a way to lean up and get in shape before going to bootcamp.
I thought cardio was the way everyone lost weight. TV, movies, and ads all show people running for hours on treadmills, so that’s where I started. I saw a few of the bigger guys in the gym working out in the back where the weights were. But I didn’t know what I was doing, and I didn’t want them to think I was stupid, so I just stuck with the cardio machines. Needless to say, I didn’t meet my goal of losing weight. Infact, I didn’t hit any goals, and so I quit in frustration. A month later, I packed up for bootcamp. I lost about 20 pounds in boot camp and graduated lean and ready to for my next unit. But within a year I had gained some of it back.
Without an overriding drive of motivation, I had fallen into the same slump before. I wasn’t AS bad as I had been since I had to perform for the PT tests. But another year and who knows? Then life threw me a curveball…
I walked into the base gym one night, and it was completely empty. I realized I was tired of not having any control over my body, over what I wanted to do. I picked up a few free weights and clumsily started to workout. I didn’t know what I was doing, but it was empty, so I didn’t feel any embarrassment. I felt GOOD. I was doing something, and I felt a slight bit of CONTROL of my life return to me. I returned to that empty gym every night after that. As I continued to do so, I realized what I was actually doing. I was literally practicing!
And as I ‘practiced’ this newfound gym skill, I became better at it. Then I started looking into nutrition and how to eat. And because I was investing in it, I became more interested in researching EVERYTHING about it. Within a few months, I looked differently in the mirror and felt a SURGE of pride. I was MOVING towards something great, I was getting better at it, and I knew now that I had cracked the code of commitment that I had never been able to master before.
Now I’m doing something I never imagined over 2 decades ago.
I’m helping other people who have no clue how to train, eat, and lose weight but want to change their lives for the better. In short, I help people who don’t know how to find their motivation, stick with it, and conquer their dream of building a better body. I love helping people who are just like I was not too long ago. Nobody is born knowing how to master motivation. Nobody is born knowing the secrets to getting in shape, how to eat, or the best supplements to take to shorten their training timeframe. But the cool thing is all that can be learned.
In fact, a lot of times it’s easier for people with no fitness experience because they don’t have to UNLEARN anything. They just need to jump into action. This is super important to me because I’ve seen how much life sucks when you hate how you look in the mirror, when you hate to take off your shirt, go to the beach, and feel awful about life because of it. I’ve also seen how amazing life can be when you DO know how to get in shape and eat right! Your ability to master your mind and body can literally change your life and lives of your family members forever.
What an amazing journey…
Do you have a desire to get in shape but just don’t know where to start? Have you tried to diet or workout in the past, but nothing positive seemed to happen? I’d love to know more about where you are on your journey right now. If so, I am about to launch a new program called the Sixpack Playbook (see it at SIXPACKPLAYBOOK.COM) that will help others start transforming their lives piece by piece. Along with my books and guides, I offer a nutrition course, as well as my personal/customized nutrition coaching too for those that want to go ALL IN.
Hope you have a great day,
